Some cruise cabins have VCRs or DVD players and some televisions also have radio/music channels. The cabins also usually have a night table reading lamps and a chair. Most modern cruise ships come with a hairdryer so you won`t have to bring one from home. Some standard staterooms feature personal safes table desk with chair convertible loveseat mini-refrigerator and even Internet access although it is often much more costly than in the common Internet lounge. The cruise line brochure or Web site usually specifies what amenities are in each cabin.
Cost is typically the primary concern of most travelers. The more amenities a cabin offers the more it will cost. For example cabins with a balcony typically cost 25% more than cabins with just a window. Windowless cabins cost far less but guests are left with no view. It is important to know what you are willing to live without on your trip. If a balcony is not that important then forego it to save money for entertainment or a future trip. Cabin sizes will differ on different cruise lines. The smallest rooms on larger cruise ships will be bigger than some of the larger rooms on smaller cruise ships. Many people prefer to get a smaller room and extend their vacation. After all the cabin is just a place to sleep. All of the fun and entertainment is above deck.
A cruise passenger`s perception of onboard service is so often dependent upon who their stateroom attendant was and which waiters / waitresses served their meals. Since my wife and I started Direct Line Cruises there have been several instances in which different clients on the same exact cruise would report radically different service levels. So at best any evaluation of service should be taken only as a generalization based on limited individual experiences while onboard.
While onboard one of NCL`s executives asked me what I thought of the ship and what type of client it would be best suited for. Without hesitation I responded that the Epic would be most appreciated by the client who has been on many cruise ships and now wants to experience something truly unique. Consistent with that it`s no coincidence that my wife booked the 15-year anniversary cruise for Direct Line Cruises` staff on the NCL Epic and now that we`ve gotten a small taste of it we can hardly wait until September when we set sail on the Epic for 7 nights.
At the economy end of the scale a co owner could buy 1% of an economical cruise ship for about $5000. However it is not necessary for all co owners to have equal shares in the ship. Ownership can easily be divided up into 1% increments. If one buyer wanted 5% then his cost of acquisition would be $25000. He would be entitled to 5% of the ship`s cabins and would have five votes on operations and management of the ship such as itinerary planning.
